Dhaka ranks the third least liveable city in the world- Economist Intelligence Unit.

Analyzing Dhaka’s Position in the Global Livability Index

Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, consistently ranks among the least livable cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Livability Index. In 2024, Dhaka placed 6th least livable, scoring 43.8 out of 100.

The EIU assesses 173 cities across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Dhaka’s low scores reflect challenges like poor infrastructure (26.8), inadequate healthcare (29.2), and environmental degradation.

  • Infrastructure: Unplanned urbanization and traffic congestion hinder mobility.
  • Healthcare: Limited access to quality medical services impacts rankings.
  • Environment: Loss of 17.67% wetland since 1995 reduces livability.

Despite mega projects like metro rail, lack of governance and coordination stalls progress. BIArb’s events, like Digital Dialogue 12, discuss solutions to enhance Dhaka’s livability.
